Reiki is a spiritual practice developed in 1922 by Japanese Buddhist Mikao Usui that uses a technique commonly called palm healing as a form of complementary and alternative medicine and is sometimes classified as oriental medicine by some professional bodies. Through the use of this technique, practitioners believe that they are transferring healing energy in the form of ki through the palms.
Acupuncture is the procedure of inserting and manipulating filiform needles into various points on the body to relieve pain or for therapeutic purposes. According to traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture points are situated on meridians along which qi ("life energy") flows. These meridians are essentially the same as "nadis" from Hinduism which are said to flow into and out of the chakras which are located as "vortices" within the spinal column and brain. Modern acupuncture texts present them as ideas that are useful in clinical practice and continue to inform the practice of acupuncture, but there is no evidence to support their existence and they have not been reconciled with contemporary knowledge about biology, physics or chemistry.
Ayurveda, known as the "science of life," is a system of Indian traditional medicine. While those in the west may consider it a form of alternative medicine the ancients state it is a primary science of treatment that dates back as far as 5,000 years ago that included everything from preventive maintenance, herbal medicines, massage, yoga, treatment and even surgery. From Sanskrit the word Ayurveda comprises the words ayus, meaning 'life' and veda, meaning 'science.' Evolving throughout its history, Ayurveda remains an influential system of medicine in South Asia.
